A new investigation by Animal Outlook found 11 welfare violations at shops around the San Francisco Bay Area live markets that slaughter and sell live animals in public. These live markets violate the law, and the undercover footage shows disturbing conditions.

Right across the San Francisco Bay Area are dozens of live markets where animals are sold live or slaughtered and sold right to customers. Undercover investigators with Animal Outlook recently visited 18 live markers in San Francisco, San Jose, and Oakland and were shocked by what they saw.

These live markets are located in plain sight. They sit among homes and neighborhood shopping centers, and children walk past them on the way to school. The investigators took hidden cameras to make sure that existing animal welfare laws were being enforced. They also hope to call attention to these inhumane markets that people might see every day but don’t give a second thought to what’s happening there.

According to investigators, when they visited these 18 live markets, they discovered numerous inhumane practices including:

These live markets are a nightmare for animals. These poor creatures are kept in crowded tanks and cages, slaughtered mercilessly, and even placed in plastic bags where they suffocate. According to California state law, dismembering, flaying, or cutting open any animal while it is still alive is illegal.

Sign this petition to demand San Francisco Animal Care and Control investigate and shut down any vendors that are found in violation of animal welfare or human health laws!

An innocent Orca named Corky was attacked in one of SeaWorld’s smallest prison-like tanks. Corky has been trapped in captivity for over 50 years. She is stuffed so tight in a small tank that he could not escape an encounter with another whale who attacked her.

Whale attacks are rare in the wild, but when these animals are trapped in these tiny pools, they can become distressed, aggressive, and develop other behavioral issues. In their natural habitat, orcas can swim on average 40 miles per day and dive between 100 to 500 feet many times throughout the day. However, in their tiny tanks at SeaWorld, they are not able to do this.

Fairfax County, the largest county in Northern Virginia, has turned 112 public parks into killing grounds for bow hunters to murder deer. The Park Authority initiated bow hunting in over 100 Fairfax County Parks without permission from the public or residents in the county.

The neighboring Fairfax city has adopted effective and more humane deer sterilizations that have even proven to lower deer-vehicle collisions. Other nearby counties are using projects like male sterilizations to control the deer populations. Arlington County is doing what all counties should be doing, leaving nature alone. They have decided to leave deer at peace and let nature do what nature does. There is absolutely no reason that Fairfax County should not adopt these same more humane and safe rules.

Fairfax County, on the other hand, is allowing bow hunters to murder deer. However, bow hunters have a high rate of injuring deer rather than killing them immediately. The hunters often wait for the deer to bleed out and suffer until they die, which can take almost an hour.

Many say that Jackson, Mississippi, has become the newest Flint as they are suffering a water crisis due to racism. Many residents are frustrated and say that racism has set Jackson up for failure.

Jackson, Mississippi, has been without safe drinking water for weeks. After flooding caused a pump failure at the water treatment facility to break, the city, which is a predominantly Black community, is not able to shower, hydrate, do dishes, cook, or clean. Even before the pump failure, Jackson was under a “boil water” notice, and many fear the situation is becoming the next Flint. If Flint taught us anything, it’s that clean water needs to be prioritized!

“Racism set Jackson up for failure. It was a man-made disaster that was decades in the making,” said Andre Perry, a senior fellow at the Brookings Institution Metropolitan Policy Program.

Sign this petition to demand Mississippi Lawmakers address the water crisis and the racism that caused it!

When Heard County Animal Control Officers went to save a puppy that a vulture was trying to grab and fly away with, they were not prepared for what they would find. Vultures were circling a rescue center, and one was trying to grab a puppy and fly away with it. When officers went to the Dogs Rock Rescue, they found hundreds of dead dogs that were decaying and being picked apart by vultures.

The Heard County’s Sheriff’s deputies almost 200 dogs of all ages in various states at Dogs Rock Rescue, west of Atlanta in Georgia. The dogs that were alive were suffering from emaciation, starvation, and dehydration. They were sick and had not had any veterinary care. The dogs were in small dirty cages and the dead dogs were being eaten by maggots. What’s terrifying of all, this place had a license to be operating.

When Pieper Lewis was just 15 years old and trying to escape her abusive mother, she met a 28-year-old man who took her in. The man began to force her to have sex with other men for money. She was young and scared, and in May 2020, Lewis was forced at knifepoint to go into the house of a man who had raped her multiple times. The man once again drugged and raped Lewis. When she woke up and realized what had happened, she fatally stabbed him while he was sleeping.

Lewis has expressed remorse for her actions but has said that she, too, was a victim. She faced 20 years in prison, but after serving two years in juvenile detention, the judge ordered her to receive five years of probation. In juvenile detention, Lewis earned her GED and has dreams of being a fashion and graphic designer, as well as a juvenile justice advocate.

“That day, a combination of complicated actions took place resulting in a death of a person and stole the innocence of a child,” she said.

Now, Lewis has been ordered to pay $150,000 in restitution to the man’s family and is sentenced to five years of supervised probation.

A GoFundMe for Lewis was started by her former teacher to help her pay the $150,000 and has already raised over $550,000. However, Lewis can not have a fresh start until she is granted clemency.

The Urbaez family from Venezuela navigated their way through ten countries and multiple complicated and bureaucratic immigration systems before being told they would have to leave their beloved pit bull, Max, behind at the U.S. border.

Max stayed by the family’s side throughout the whole journey but was ripped away from the family right at the end. Max was placed in an animal shelter and was finally reunited with his family only, thanks to the kindness of strangers who helped the family locate him. After taking Max away, Border Patrol did not coordinate with the family or the animal shelter.

Although temporary quarantine protocol is often necessary to make sure they have adequate vaccines and don’t harm other animals, some cases are not always based on logic, and they often take the animals away but don’t help reunite the families after.

Sign this petition to demand that Border Patrol remove pointless protocols and train officers to prioritize keeping families united with their companion animals!

A Reddit post went viral and shared incredibly sad photos of four baby kittens who were trapped in a plastic bag, tied, abandoned, and left to die. This cruel animal abuser left the bag on the side of the street. Thankfully, a passerby saw the bag and something moving inside and was able to save the kittens. These situations happen all too often, especially during kitten season when there is an influx of kittens and shelters run out of room.

According to national estimates , approximately 6.3 million companion animals are abandoned and enter U.S. animal shelters nationwide every year. In the U.S. alone, over 5.4 million cats are killed on the side of the road. If you happen to notice a cat on the side of the road, whether or not the animal is injured, safely put on the hazard lights and pull your car completely off the road before attempting to rescue them, says the Humane Society .

Here are the full rescue tips that just may come in handy one day, and while you’re at it, sign this petition to demand all states make all animal abuse a felony now!

Each year more than 2.7 million animals are euthanized in shelters every year in the United States because they are not adopted into loving homes. Throughout their lifetimes, an unaltered pair of cats and their offspring can produce hundreds of thousands of cats. That’s a staggering number.

Sign this petition to ask state governments to give more funding to local animal shelters to save these animals and give them a place to live until they can find them a forever home!

Recently, a Mississippi Appeals Court purposefully decided to keep a racist, Jim Crow-era voting restriction in the state’s constitution. The restriction keeps people that are convicted of felonies from being allowed to exercise their right to vote along with the rest of the state.

This law has racist and white supremacist origins. The law was first introduced in 1890 and was placed to make sure that Black people in the South did not get all of the gains of the Civil War and Reconstruction. The ruling explicitly noted that they created the restriction to punish those who were convicted of “black crimes” while white criminals were allowed to keep their voting power.

Sign this petition to demand Mississippi lawmakers pass a new law to allow people to have the right to vote!

Researchers just found that some of Shein’s fast fashion clothing may contain “hazardous waste.” One piece of clothing that they tested was a jacket made for toddlers. They found that this piece had almost 20 times the amount of lead that is safe for children to be exposed to. They also tested a purse that contained over five times the safe level of lead.

Lead is extremely dangerous and has been called a public health crisis in multiple countries. Lead poisoning can lead to things like anemia and nausea to even more dangerous kidney and brain damage.

Shein must test its clothing and remove lead from the products they sell. There is no reason why a multi-billion dollar company can not ensure that their products are not putting their customers at risk!
