TWO Sea Cow Lake Road business owners say their companies have been crippled by an ongoing sewage overflow.

Zaheeda Ismail and Soobramoney Govender said their yards and workshop have been completely submerged in sewage.

It is believed that a non-functioning pump station and a blocked sewer have caused the overflow, and the problem has been ongoing for nine weeks.

“My business has been based here for 17 years, and on occasion, we have had issues with the sewerage system but never to this extent. This is the worst I’ve seen, and every day that goes by, the pool of wastewater gets closer to my office. It has damaged my stock and put me in a financial crisis,” she said.

Ward councillor for the area, Bobby Maharajh, said he, too, had reported the situation to the relevant department.

“This problem should be treated as a priority as should any sewage leak. I’ve fielded several sewage complaints across Ward 34, and the vandalism, theft and lack of maintenance of the various pump stations is a serious contributing factor. I do feel the residents’ frustrations as this should not have gone on for this long,” he said.

The eThekwini Municipality did not provide comment by the time of going to print.
