Less than three months after Sermatech, the Construction giant handed over a motorised borehole to the Obiontan community in Iwuru, it has donated another motorised borehole project to the Okurike community, all in Iwuru, Biase local government of Cross River State.
The project estimated at about N4million is in line with the Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of the company.
Clan Head of Iwuru, Chief Stephen Agbor, while cutting the tape to declare the water safe for consumption said, “Today the people and residents of Okurike like their brethren at Lagos street, all in Obiontan-Iwuru community are very happy because what was our problem, is today tackled by this company.”
The royal father represented by Chief Okon Nyong, applauded Sermatech for the gesture, maintaining that, “because you have proven yourself a good partner, we want to assure you of continuous peace and favourable atmosphere to embark on your legitimate business.”
He pointed out that, “because water is so dear to us and entire mankind, we will protect the equipment and handle the project wisely, we thank your company.”
Community Secretary/CLO of Sermatech, Okewara Etan, affirmed that the motorised borehole project will go a long way to save the community members from waterborne diseases which often threaten them due to the lack of potable water to drink, cook, bath and wash.
Etan who applauded the management of Sermatech for living up to its responsibility intimated that, “we do travel between four to five kilometres to get water, but this company today has changed our story.”
Etan, like the literary Oliver Twist, further appealed to the construction giant Sermatech, to commence the opening up and grading of the street roads, as contained in the MOU reached between the company and community.
Plant Manager, Engr Uche Emeka, reasoned that “the job deserves to be done according to the approved specifications as the people of Iwuru have demonstrated the attributes of a good host, hence deserve quality project in line with the Memorandum of understanding so agreed.”
According to Emeka, “we are not some political parties or politicians who promise without fulfilling, for us in Sermatech, we value community relations and keep to our promises.”
Giving an overview of the job specifications, the State representative of Sermatech, Ento Edako, disclosed that “the project is tagged, Iwuru community borehole number two, with a GP tank capacity of 5000 litres.”
Continuing, Edako explained that the Steel tank stand is 18 feet tall, while the depth of the borehole is 185 metres deep with two horsepower submersible pump, even as the complete basement chemical treatment was thoroughly and professionally carried out to check bacteria and impurities.
He added that “the motorised borehole project has a 4.2 KVA power generating set, a generator house installed with protectors for the safety of the submersible pump and three water dispensable taps.”
Admitting that “the water is clean for human consumption,” Edako charged community members to protect the equipment jealously and proffer solutions to check the activities of vandals.
Little Amanda Nyong, aged 15, could not hide her joy as she said, “I am happy because I use to trek a very long distance to get water before going to school. My mother will wake me up when they hit the church bell to start going for water, now, we have water here, I will not suffer again and will always concentrate in class.”
Asked if she never concentrated before now, Nyong said, “yes, even in the class I will be thinking about how to locate water for use at home and when to conclude fetching water so as to tackle my homework, so, I thank Sermatech for helping me out.”
